East Gippsland is a diverse area. With mountains to the north, the extensive Gippsland Lakes Ramsar sites and the sea to the south, with long sandy beaches and kilometers of wild unspoilt coastline making it a magic place to be.
It is a rural cattle and sheep farming area but also has commercial vegetable growing and processing concerns. Forestry and fishing also represent a large portion of the industrial picture of East Gippsland.
Our many National Parks and Nature Reserves and great climate make many outdoor activities possible.
The East Gippsland area is one of the best birdwatching places in Victoria with regions of forests and woodlands, heaths, mighty rivers, lakes and wetlands of international significance, and remnant pockets of temperate rainforest providing a diverse range of habitats for our wonderful birds.
Use our guides to direct your day's activity or to plan a longer holiday. Work from a base or plan a tour - there is plenty of accommodation.
Each of our guides represents one of 14 areas within our region, each with its own 'mud' map. More detailed maps and information on accommodation are available at the our local Tourist Information Centres.
Enjoy our fantastic region and leave it looking just as lovely for others to enjoy.
Many places do not have rubbish bins - so please be prepared to take your rubbish with you. |
These guides cover only the main birding areas visited by the East Gippsland Bird Observers Club. Other areas such as Wingan Inlet, Thurra River, Bemm River, Suggan Buggan, Bentley's Plain, Dargo, Native Dog Flat and the Alpine regions which we visit as club camp sites are left for you to discover for yourself.
Take care to check road conditions - some roads are used by logging trucks and some are suitable for 4WD vehicles only.
Information within the guides will take you to some lovely little gems of places that we wish to share with you. We hope you enjoy them and the birds that inhabit them as much as we do.
